Jack Butland has been left gushing over Robin Propper given his impact in the backline after joining Rangers this summer.

Gers secured the services of the 31-year-old Dutch centre-back who moved from FC Twente and has become a mainstay in the first team.

He has formed a decent understanding with John Souttar at the back and Butland recently spoke about their partnership in defence.

The English goalkeeper said ahead of the game against Lyon on 3 October, as quoted by Rangers Review’s X account: “John has grown incredibly and is maturing into a top defender. Robin has been excellent and the best is yet to come.”

Despite encouraging performances, Philippe Clement and his team still face challenges in refining their defensive solidity, especially when pitted against more formidable opponents.

Recent displays have shown moments where Gers’ backline was exposed, indicating vulnerabilities that could be exploited by teams with superior tactical acumen or physical prowess.

Against top-tier competition, these lapses could prove costly.

Clement’s task is to drill deeper into defensive cohesion, ensuring that individual talents like Propper and Souttar translate into an impenetrable unit.

Tighter defensive coordination, better anticipation and resilience under pressure are critical areas for improvement to ensure Gers don’t concede softly or give away leads, thereby making them a formidable side that gives nothing away in crucial matches.

Last season, the club did not look formidable at the back and the Belgian has to resolve that issue sooner rather than later.
