'Shambles' - Gordon Dalziel shares Tavernier exit verdict after what he has seen at Rangers

Gordon Dalziel has shared his verdict on the reports linking James Tavernier with a move away from Rangers.

The club captain would look “favourably” on a move to Trabzonspor this summer, according to Duhuliye, with the Turkish Super Lig side vying for his signature.

Despite being linked with an Ibrox exit, Philippe Clement has thrown the 32-year-old back into the starting XI for the pre-season matches against Birmingham City and Union Berlin.

Speaking via Clyde 1 Superscoreboard on Tuesday (30 July), Dalziel said: “I’m probably one of the few that if I was inside Ibrox and making the decisions, I would try to keep James Tavernier from last season. He brings a lot to the team.

“I watched him the other day and I can’t deny, defensively he was terrible. In fact, the back four were a shambles. They look like a back four that can easily ship goals.”

James Tavernier to remain at Rangers?

While Tavernier has been heavily linked with a move to Turkey, there is potentially an outcome where the full-back stays in Scotland this summer.

As Philippe Clement and Nils Koppen continued to rebuild the squad, it was looking more and more likely that the veteran would be sacrificed to sign more players, but that may not be the case anymore.

The manager must strike the right balance between youth prospects and experience if the Gers are going to challenge their Old Firm rivals Celtic for the Scottish Premiership title and compete in Europe.

Clinton Nsiala, 20, Hamza Igamane, 21, Connor Barron, 21, Oscar Cortes, 20, and Jefte, 20, are all new arrivals who will need guidance during their first season in Scotland.

Now that Connor Goldson has confirmed his move to Aris Limassol, only a few older players are left for the new youngsters to learn from, so it could be worth keeping Tavernier around for another season.

While the right-back was caught out on multiple occasions last season and looks to be struggling somewhat in pre-season, his eye-watering number of goals from defence is not an easy figure to replace.
