Sky Sports: Rangers attacking ace makes Ibrox exit decision after offer

Ianis Hagi has turned down a Rangers exit to Rapid Bucharest and is unlikely to move to a club Romania, according to Sky Sports.

The outlet reported via their website on 26 August (9.03pm) that the attacker would still rather remain at Ibrox despite being told be Philippe Clement he can go.

The Belgian has left Hagi training with the B Team, with a clause in his contract reportedly entitling him to a £6,000 pay rise if he plays [Daily Record, 13 August].

Although he still wants to stay, if the 25-year-old is to leave it is more likely to be another destination and not his home country.

Ianis Hagi wants Rangers stay as Rapid Bucharest rejected

Rapid were thought to want Hagi to kickstart their poor start to the season which has seen them sack former Celtic boss Neil Lennon [PLZ Soccer, 20 August].

And they were planning to use the cash brought in from the sale of Albion Rrahmani to make a move for the Gers ace [Fanatik, 20 August], after the Light Blues had themselves chased the Kosovan striker during the transfer window.

Internal talks at Rangers have been tipped as a route out of the stalemate with Hagi by Ibrox News pundit Derek Ferguson, and since he seems so committed to the club that appears the most obvious solution.

It makes little sense that the Romania international was given a contract extension that contained such a clause in December 2022, only for the club to apparently be running scared of it just a handful of appearances later.

Clement Rangers
Philippe Clement has told Ianis Hagi he can leave Rangers this summer.

He may not be the golden ticket to a high-functioning Gers line-up under Clement, and it is probably the case that stand-out performances for the B Team are slightly misleading, as his quality against lower-level opposition contrasts with peripheral teammates underwhelming in the first-team.

But if a transfer away isn’t going to happen it is certainly more useful to pay him to play than to pay him not to.

Rabbi Matondo is another who is thought to be on a huge salary as a potential Blackburn move hangs in the balance so the wage bill is certainly an issue, but if Hagi wants to play then the club would probably do well to find a way for him to do so than leave him in the reserves for months.

In other Rangers news, a controversial claim has now been made about Cantwell after he angered fans.
