Blackburn Rovers want to sign Todd Cantwell from Rangers before the end of the transfer window, Alan Nixon reports.

The Sun journalist reported via his Patreon on 26 August that the English Championship club are ready to make an offer for the midfielder, who is potentially cheaper than alternative targets, and could sign him on loan or permanently.

The former Norwich City man is currently training with the B Team and hasn’t featured at all after Philippe Clement revealed [Sky Sports, 25 August] that he had twice asked to leave the club.

Blackburn have also been linked to a move for Rabbi Matondo, with John Eustace admitting the Welsh international was a player of interest [Lancashire Telegraph, 22 August].

Blackburn also interested in Rabbi Matondo from Rangers

Given the choice of the two then Clement would surely choose to offload Cantwell to Ewood Park since he can’t do anything with him while he is out of contention and training away from the first team.

Fans are upset with the 26-year-old for picking up a decent wage while not contributing to the side so any attempt to reintegrate him into the side if the transfer deadline passed might be difficult.

Although Cantwell was a Light Blues star under former boss Michael Beale he has never been the same under Clement, so an exit would be the best option at this stage.

Trabzonspor were interested but never came forward with a bid [Sky Sports, 12 August] so Blackburn making an offer before the deadline could be vital.

Matondo
Blackburn are also interested in signing Rabbi Matondo from Rangers.

He likely will be cheaper than alternatives since the Light Blues need to offload him, although Beale himself claimed on the Mindset For Sport Podcast on 19 August his signing was a completely free so the club won’t be losing money even if they give him away.

Should Eustace take Cantwell back south it might rule out a second move for Matondo unless they are ready to spend heavily.

Clement himself claimed the 23-year-old will probably stay after his two-goal performance against Ross County unless someone puts plenty of money down [Sky Sports, 24 August], and he is believed to be on a massive contract for the Scottish Premiership according to Ibrox News pundit Derek Ferguson.

In other Rangers news, the Light Blues are chasing a late deal for an attacker who exhibited “brilliance” for his country this summer.
