Rangers defender Leon Balogun was called out as “so poor” for his use of the ball by BBC Sportsound pundit Leanne Crichton during the 2-1 win over Motherwell.

The experienced centre-back was brought on as a 73rd-minute substitute for debutant Robin Propper as Philippe Clement looked to shore things up in the closing stages at Hampden Park.

But Crichton was not too impressed by the 36-year-old’s cameo appearance as the Gers ultimately scored a first Scottish Premiership win of the campaign at their temporary home.

“The players who have come on for Rangers in the second half have been nowhere near the level,” she said live on air.

“The final ball and the quality of the pass, the relationships all over the pitch it’s been very, very fragmented.

“And when you bring on players that are classed as experienced in Leon Balogun, his use of the ball at times has been so poor, so wasteful, inviting a lot of pressure.”

Philippe Clement still has transfer work to do for Rangers

The important thing for Rangers today was to get three points against a Motherwell side who were struck down by several injuries ahead of this Premiership clash against the Gers.

And, although it was not always the prettiest of affairs, that is exactly what Clement’s side did and three points is three points, especially at this early stage of the campaign.

That does not mean there are not areas for concern, though, and you would certainly expect a much cooler head from someone as experienced as Balogun to see out the game.

It is clear that Clement still has plenty of work to do in the transfer market, there are players he would ideally like to ship out and definitely plenty he would want to bring in.

The next couple of weeks are sure to be very busy for the Rangers boss, let’s hope he can make some decent additions before the window slams shut.

In other Rangers news, one Sky Sports reporter was left stunned by what a different Gers ace did.
