Tom English 'Surprised' by Clement decisions live on BBC in Rangers win v Motherwell

Philippe Clement surprised Tom English with his tactical decisions as Rangers hobbled to a 2-1 victory against Motherwell at Hampden Park on 10 August.

The BBC journalist questioned the Belgian as he decided against bringing on both Danilo and Jefte to mix things up in the second half.

Whilst the scoreline was tight in the first Scottish Premiership game in their temporary home, Clement’s side did dominate chances against the Steelmen and did enough to get over the line through Cyriel Dessers and Vaclav Cerny’s first-half goals.

Speaking live on BBC Scotland Sportsound [10 August, 17:15] English said: “I’m surprised that Rangers didn’t bring on Danilo or Jefte to mix it up.

“They need a lot more, there are three or four players starting in that Rangers team that aren’t good enough.”

Rangers need to look at new transfers immediately

Whilst Rangers had the large share of chances against Motherwell, the win on paper was unconvincing and you sense they will get found out as the season rolls on, especially if and when injuries become worse.

In a busy window of recruitment, the club are still suffering from losing several experienced heads and having replaced them largely with younger charges, there will be a transition period which could be difficult.

The consensus is that, as English said, further faces need to come in to be good enough to slot straight into Clement’s starting XI, and players such as Dessers – who did well last season but could’ve raised it a gear too – have to continue to be at it.

Exciting players such as Jefte have signed, but the Brazilian and compatriot Danilo were both left as unused substitutes, as was also the case in last weekend’s opening draw at Hearts – Jefte played 45 minutes against Dynamo Kyiv in midweek, but Danilo is yet to feature at all.

There has also been controversy around leaving the likes of Ianis Hagi out of the reckoning – Clement has his trusted players which is of course important, but there are plenty of others with something to offer the team, especially when they’re not performing to the level the fans demand.
