Graeme Souness believes that Pep Guardiola and Jurgen Klopp would also struggle at Rangers given the recent scrutiny on Philippe Clement.
The Belgian is under pressure as Gers find themselves 11 points off the top of the table with Celtic appearing to be running away with the title.
However, instead of blaming Clement or the hierarchy, Souness believes the main problems lie with the playing squad.
He said, as quoted by the Daily Record: “Rangers have a manager who is more than capable of achieving for the club but I don’t care if you had Pep Guardiola and Jurgen Klopp working at Ibrox right now and brought Sir Alex Ferguson out of retirement to help them, I don’t see results being any different. “This guy they have in charge more than knows what he’s doing. He just needs help in terms of bringing in better players.
“From the outside looking in I have no in depth knowledge of the current situation so I won’t be critical of the structures in place. What I would say is that I don’t care who the manager that is in there right now, I’m not sure he’d be getting any better results with the squad they have.”
Philippe Clement is certainly responsible for the problems at Rangers
While Souness indirectly acknowledges the quality disparity between Gers and Celtic’s squads and hints at structural issues, the responsibility for Rangers’ lacklustre performance also falls on Clement.
Despite the team’s limitations, a manager’s role includes imprinting a clear tactical identity and ensuring that the team performs optimally within its capabilities.
The Belgian’s failure to evolve the team’s style of play since his arrival suggests a coaching shortfall.
The team’s inability to show consistent improvement or adapt effectively to the domestic challenges indicates that tactical and motivational aspects under Clement’s guidance might not be up to par.
This stagnation, where performances remain erratic and results disappointing, underscores that while better players could enhance the squad, Clement’s inability to extract consistent, identity-driven performances from the current squad equally contributes to the ongoing issues at Ibrox.
Hopefully, the win against Nice in Europe was a turning point and they can build on that for the rest of the season.
