Leeds United forward Joe Gelhardt is keen to sign for Rangers in the January transfer window, sources have told Football Insider.

Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, senior correspondent Pete O’Rourke revealed that Leeds are still undecided about whether to sanction a loan move or hold out for a formal permanent bid.

This comes after former Man United chief scout Mick Brown told Football Insider that the 22-year-old wants to leave Leeds due to his lack of playing time.

Gelhardt has played just 72 minutes of football across all competitions so far this season, with just nine of those coming in his two league appearances.

Having fallen behind Mateo Joseph, Joel Piroe and Patrick Bamford in the pecking order, he is no longer a part of Daniel Farke’s plans at Elland Road.

Rangers, meanwhile, have struggled for a consistent source of goals as their first-choice centre-forward, Cyriel Dessers, has scored just six in 14 league appearances this term.

Gelhardt’s ability to play as a striker, a number ten, or on the wing is said to have piqued the interest of the transfer team at Ibrox, who are now keen to bring him in in January.

Rangers plotting Joe Gelhardt swoop after latest January twist

Rangers’ financial situation means they are strapped for cash ahead of the transfer window, and will therefore explore the loan market to strengthen Clement’s side.

The boss had come under pressure after some inconsistent results, with his side 11 points behind Celtic in the league, but the board are keen to back him in January.

Gelhardt has emerged as a potential target given his availability mid-way though the season, and him being willing to move north of the border will come as a boost to their chances.

However, Rangers are expecting to face competition from English Championship sides in their efforts to land his signature in January.

Football Insider revealed in November that multiple clubs in England have been keeping an eye on his situation and could now swoop with an offer.

However, Gers are not expected to face difficulties convincing the player to make the move should Leeds allow him to leave on loan as he will be promised more regular football.

In other news, Rangers are “looking at very clever loan signings” in January.
