Arsenal will prioritise bringing academy gems through into the first-team setup this summer rather than making big-money signings.

Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, Football Insider journalist Connor Humm revealed that Arsenal plan to fast-track top stars from the Hale End academy into the senior squad.

Sources understand Mikel Arteta wants to flesh out his squad with further depth to provide backup options to star players such as Bukayo Saka.

Saka, 22, played 47 games last season and missed just three Premier League games due to the lack of a strong replacement in the squad, often having to play through injuries.

As a result, the club could turn to its academy, with success in that method proven by the likes of Saka and Emile Smith Rowe in recent seasons.

Humm explained that there are “three or four” players at Hale End who could take the step up in the coming season, with 17-year-old Ethan Nwaneri the highlight.

Saka and Smith Rowe are the main examples of youth players progressing into the first team under Arteta, having made a combined 341 appearances since the boss’ appointment.

As a result of their success, the club are keen to continue to provide a pathway to the senior side for the young players on their books.

However, Football Insider revealed that the Gunners could cash in on Smith Rowe this summer if they receive a £30million bid for his services.

The need for increased strength in depth at the Emirates would allow the likes of Saka to remain fresh and retain a high level of performance throughout the season.

It would also minimise the risk of the club’s biggest stars struggling with injury issues, as had been seen with Gabriel Jesus last season.

In other news, Aston Villa plan to accept £30million bids for Matty Cash.
