Exclusive: Aston Villa could demand Premier League payment in new legal war

Aston Villa may seek “anti-competition” damages if they pursue legal action against the Premier League, sources have told Football Insider.

Villa are on the brink of breaching Profit and Sustainability Rules after posting losses of £119million in their 2022-23 accounts.

Under PSR, top-flight clubs are allowed to lose a maximum of £105million over a rolling three-year period.

Villa suggested that the loss limit should be increased to £135million for 2024-25 but their proposal was voted against in the latest Premier League meeting this month.

As reported by The Times, Villa owner Nassef Sawiris is now considering legal action against the Premier League’s financial rules after suggesting they “are not good for football”.

It follows Manchester City’s legal challenge against the Premier League’s associated party transaction rules which is set to conclude after a two-week hearing.

Sources have told Football Insider that Villa will demand a financial payout from the Premier League for “anti-competition” damages if they do pursue legal action.

Villa face having to sell multiple first-team players this summer in order to comply with the financial regulations.

As revealed by Football Insider, Aston Villa are now willing to listen to offers for defender Diego Carlos this summer.

If Villa are found to be in breach of PSR in 2023-24 then they will face a points deduction for the upcoming league campaign.
