Sources: Chelsea 2023 signing in advanced talks to move in next 48 hrs

Chelsea forward David Fofana is in advanced talks to join AEK Athens in the next 48 hours, sources have told Football Insider.

The Blues hope to offload the outcast forward before the Greek transfer window shuts on Wednesday.

Fofana is one of several fringe players that the Premier League side have been trying to offload all summer, and AEK Athens have shown interest in recent weeks.

Sources have told Football Insider that negotiations between the two clubs have stepped up in the last 48 hours, but the fee has yet to be agreed.

Chelsea will receive a smaller fee than the £8.4million they paid Molde for Fofana, but they are hopeful that add-ons being triggered will lead to them making a profit on the 21-year-old.

Fofana has made just three first-team appearances for Chelsea since joining the club in January 2023, with only one of them being from the first whistle.

Fofana has had two loan spells since joining the London giants, with the first being at Union Berlin and then another with Burnley.

The striker scored four times in the Premier League last season for the Clarets in 15 appearances but was unable to help keep the club in the top flight.

Fofana has been one of several stars that have been training away from the first-team squad since Enzo Maresca joined the club.

The new Chelsea boss has publicly stated that players who aren’t in his plans will not get a chance, which has cast doubts over the futures of players such as Ben Chilwell.

Raheem Sterling joined Arsenal on a season-long loan deal at the end of the British transfer window after being deemed surplus to requirements by Maresca.
