Everton have been dealt a transfer blow as Kalvin Phillips has agreed to join Ipswich Town, sources have told Football Insider.
Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, senior correspondent Pete O’Rourke revealed that the Man City midfielder had been a priority target for Sean Dyche, but Ipswich moved quickly to secure a deal.
Phillips was told he could leave the Etihad this summer as he no longer had a place in Pep Guardiola’s plans, with both loan and permanent moves considered.
Football Insider revealed on 4 August that Everton had pushed ahead of the queue for his signature and were confident of reaching a deal before the end of the month.
However, Kieran McKenna’s newly promoted side convinced the midfielder to make the move to Portman Road on loan for the season.
Everton miss out on Kalvin Phillips deal after Ipswich twist
Phillips joined Man City from Leeds in 2022 in a deal worth £42million, but has made just 31 appearances for the club in that time – 17 of which came from the bench.
A disappointing loan spell with West Ham in the second half of last season then put the nail in the coffin of his City career as he started just three games for the Hammers.
Despite plenty of involvement with City in pre-season, it was made clear to Phillips that he was no part of Guardiola’s plans for the new season.
Everton had been heavily linked with a move throughout the summer, with a loan move seemingly on the cards as their financial situation ruled out a permanent bid.
However, a late move from Ipswich saw them swoop ahead of the competition for his signature.
Football Insider revealed that Everton made the first move to sign Phillips on 17 July, but no formal offer materialised as they continued to monitor the situation.
Dyche and the recruitment team at Goodison Park remain desperate to bring in a new midfielder before 31 August after losing Amadou Onana to Aston Villa.
In other news, Man United will re-open talks to sign Jarrad Branthwaite.
