Philippe Clement might have just been given a chance to escape the criticism at Ibrox as Rangers continue to struggle for form.
The 50-year-old arrived in Scotland last October with plenty of hope riding on his shoulders, most of which was justified after the Gers charged into the lead for the title and lifted the Scottish League Cup trophy.
However, 13 months after becoming the manager at Ibrox, the Belgian is under pressure to turn his fortunes around as a nine-point gap has emerged between them and Celtic in the Scottish Premiership table.
Even worse, Aberdeen look far more likely to take the second spot in the league table, especially if the Light Blues continue to slip up against the likes of the Dons and Kilmarnock.
With all of this in mind, Clement could easily escape all of the noise after recently being named as a leading candidate to take Domenico Tedesco’s job at the Belgium national team [Daily Record].
Philippe Clement exit decision already been made at Rangers?
Despite the growing frustrations with Clement and the possible exit route emerging for him right now, Clement is unlikely to choose an exit and run away from his current problems.
Speaking to the press in September, he said: “It’s really clear I engaged myself long-term for Rangers last month. Whoever comes, whatever team comes, I’m not going to go away.
“Really clear. I want this project with the club to make it really successful for the future. We all know we need time for that, we need a few transfer windows for that, we need a lot of work to do for that.”
While the new links to the Belgium job could sway him away from Ibrox, he is clearly determined to make things work and make Rangers a successful club in terms of trophies.
Clement has proven his ability to create a title-winning team with Genk and Club Brugge in Belgium, and adding silverware to the trophy cabinet was one of his first achievements at Ibrox.
Of course, fans have every right to be frustrated with the club’s current state, but there is only so much Clement can take the blame for, and he will be motivated to turn it around for the supporters.
