Liverpool have set aside funds to land a marquee defender signing in the January transfer window, sources have told Football Insider.

Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, senior correspondent Pete O’Rourke revealed that the Reds had targeted a new centre-back in the summer but were unable to land a deal and will re-ignite their pursuit in the winter.

Crystal Palace star Marc Guehi has been one of the names on Liverpool’s radar, but his £70million valuation meant they were unable to make a move.

However, the 24-year-old will have 18 months remaining on his deal at Selhurst Park in January and there is a belief that Palace will drop their asking price as a result.

This could tempt Liverpool to make a move for his signature, but they are also assessing other options as they want to strengthen at the back.

Virgil van Dijk’s contract situation is also a cause for concern, leading Slot’s side to explore potential replacements in the market.

Liverpool plan to sign new centre-back in January

Liverpool had funds available in the summer despite their lack of spending, and remain keen to bring in the right players for Arne Slot rather than doing deals for the sake of it.

Sources say Guehi “ticks a lot of boxes” for Slot and would fit perfectly into his system with his ability to play out from the back, while his age fits the club’s profile.

With the Reds currently leading the league after ten games, they are looking to strengthen their title push by adding to the squad in January.

Football Insider revealed on 7 November that they will also target a new midfielder after missing out on deals during the summer window.

Meanwhile, contract negotiations remain a priority with several star players out of contract while others will enter their final year next season.

Talks have begun over a new deal for Ibrahima Konate, who has established himself as a key player since the manager’s arrival despite initial doubts.

In other news, Liverpool plan to open Andy Robertson contract talks.
