'I Expected The White Smoke' - Stefan Borson 'surprised' after Everton takeover delay

Everton prospective owner Dan Friedkin is likely to receive imminent approval from the Premier League to complete his takeover of the club.

That is the view of finance expert Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider he is surprised there hasn’t been an announcement yet as he would have expected to see the “white smoke” by now.

Friedkin agreed a deal in September to buy Everton owner Farhad Moshiri’s 94.1 per cent stake at Goodison Park and is currently undergoing the regulatory processes before he can take control.

The takeover is also being held up by the Leadenhall case as the New York court overseeing the legal battle involving 777 Partners needs to approve the settlement of the £200million loan provided to the Merseysiders by the US investment firm.

Everton could face January issue after takeover delay

Borson suggested Everton could be hit with potential issues if they haven’t had a change of ownership by the time the January transfer window comes around.

He told Football Insider: “I would have expected by now the white smoke on the Friedkin deal.

“I would have expected it to be closer to getting approval, both in the US from the A-Cap side and the court process that’s going on there, but also from the Premier League.

“I am surprised that we haven’t had an announcement from the Premier League that he’s been approved as an owner, and that the FCA haven’t yet approved it.

“I would have thought that is imminent if the application has been made.

“There is also the possibility of additional money being needed to be put into Everton just to keep things ticking over from a working capital perspective and then, of course, the upcoming transfer window, which will give them all sorts of additional issues if they haven’t had a change of ownership.”
