Izzy Christiansen was impressed by Dejan Kulusevski’s play ahead of the first goal for Tottenham against Manchester City.

Spurs hosted the Sky Blues in the Carabao Cup on 30 October and won the game 2-1, with Timo Werner and Pape Matar Sarr finding the back of the net.

Tottenham needed a response against Pep Guardiola’s team after several players, including Kulusevski, went missing in the 1-0 loss against Crystal Palace on 27 October in the Premier League.

The former Juventus forward was arguably the best player on the pitch in the victory over the Cityzens, and Ange Postecoglou has improved his chances of winning a trophy this season.

Kulusevski got the assists for both goals, and before the first one, the Swedish national’s movement off the ball was perfect before running down the right flank and putting it on a plate for Werner, something Christiansen lauded on Sky Sports after full-time [30 October].

“This bit of movement shows how much he understands the game and how to manipulate the opponent,” she said.

“And the pass across, beautiful weight to it and Timo Werner needed that.”

Dejan Kulusevski influential at Tottenham

In the absence of Son Heung-min, Kulusevksi has stepped up for the North Londoners, often playing a previously unfamiliar role in the middle of the park.

Against City, the 24-year-old had 84 per cent passing accuracy, had six passes into the final third, created four chances and provided two assists, as per FotMob.

Apart from that, the forward missed one big chance, which would’ve been the cherry on top had he converted, had four touches in the opposition box and won two defensive duels.

Kulusevski has become indispensable in the team and has provided much-needed creativity and spark that some of the other players in the squad have sometimes failed to provide.

Werner was another player who made sure Postecoglou didn’t regret his team selection, but the German was seen holding his groin as he was substituted in the win, and it remains to be seen whether it’s a severe issue for him.

In other Tottenham news, Joe Lewis has been namedropped by a Brazilian outlet amidst interest in a Vasco da Gama sensation.
