Maxwell Cornet could see his loan spell with Southampton cut short in January with West Ham already working to loan him out again in January, Sun journalist Jack Rosser reports.
The winger joined the Hammers from Burnley back in the summer of 2022, but struggled to impress for the London club, while also being hampered by injuries.
He therefore joined Southampton on a season-long loan in the summer, but has started just twice for Russell Martin’s side despite their own difficulties at the bottom of the table.
The Saints are looking to cut short his loan move in January in order to make room to sign a new left-winger in the transfer window.
West Ham appear to be aware of that situation, having reportedly already held talks with clubs overseas about taking the Ivory Coast international on loan for the remainder of the campaign.
Maxwel Cornet creating more frustration for West Ham
Football Insider Opinion
It does seem to make sense for Southampton to cut short the winger’s loan spell in January.
The Saints are rooted to the bottom of the Premier League table, having not been helped by a controversially disallowed goal in their draw with Brighton at the weekend.
Letting go of Cornet, who they are not using, to create space in the squad and budget for a player who can help them get out of trouble, seems a smart move.
That though will not help West Ham, who have themselves underwhelmed this season, but are still above Southampton and therefore unlikely to use a player who cannot get in their side.
His return though, will add more burden to their own financial situation, and could restrict their own scope to work in the transfer market come January.
West Ham will therefore want to move him on quickly again if he does return at the turn of the year. The fact they are looking at a loan rather than a sale may say something about Cornet’s current reputation.
Having spent £17.5million (Sky Sports) to sign the winger, this could turn into a rather costly deal for the Hammers in more ways than one.
In other news, West Ham are keeping tabs on a current Brighton player.
