Sean Dyche was the subject of a social media joke from Southampton after Everton had a late goal ruled out in their 1-0 defeat on Saturday.
Southampton posted on X on 2 November in response to the Toffees’ post confirming that VAR had ruled out Beto’s last-gasp equaliser for offside, condemning them to a narrow loss at St Mary’s.
The post in question was a cropped image of a well-known meme involving Dyche, in which the boss is standing behind the words “utter woke nonsense”.
Southampton rub it in after ending Everton unbeaten run
While Southampton and neutral fans alike will take great delight in the Saints aiming a cheeky dig at Dyche’s side on social media, Toffees supporters likely won’t see the humour in it.
Thinking they’d salvaged a point through Beto’s late goal, only to see VAR step in and quash their hopes at the death, Blues fans will have gone through a rollercoaster of emotions on the south coast.
However, their performance for the first 88 minutes of the game wasn’t one to warrant anything other than a defeat, even though it took until the 85th minute for Saints to open the scoring.
Dyche will understandably come under fire having seen the Blues’ five-match unbeaten run go up in smoke, especially against a side who were previously yet to win a match this season.
A first defeat in six may not quite leave Dyche going back to the drawing board, but the 53-year-old could be running out of time to prove that his methods aren’t as outdated as some might think.
In other Everton news, Paul Merson gave his verdict on the Toffees’ survival hopes before their narrow defeat at St. Mary’s.
