The Spanish Administrative Tribunal for Sports have decided to open case against La Liga President Javier Tebas for improper conduct, according to the latest coming out of Spain. They have decided to proceed with a complaint made by Real Madrid originally.
Relevo report that the TAD will go ahead with a case against Tebas, which alleges he did not follow due process. The matter in question harks back to an urgent meeting called by La Liga in which they agreed to the CVC deal in the summer of 2021, a €2b investment in exchange for 10% of the TV rights for the next 50 years. Real Madrid, Barcelona, Athletic Club and CD Ibiza ended up opting out of the deal.
The case alleges that the meeting was called with only eight days of warning, rather than the required ten. Real Madrid have challenged the CVC deal legally on three occasions, all unsuccessfully, but this matter has been taken up. The infringement, despite being purely bureaucratic, has been referred to as ‘very serious’.
As it was, the results of that meeting were declared null and void, but a similar meeting was called for five months later, where La Liga ironed out the discrepancies in process, and ratified the CVC agreement, which Real Madrid have strongly opposed. If the case is successful, then La Liga President Tebas could face a suspension from his role.
Tebas is yet to respond to this development, and as of yet, there has been no indication how long that suspension would be.
