'Spot on' - Ex-FIFA official delighted with VAR after Dundee United v Rangers controversy

Noel Egan has praised VAR after Emmanuel Adegboyega avoided a red card as Rangers beat Dundee United 1-0 on Sunday (15 September).

The ex-FIFA official doesn’t believe the centre-back’s challenge on Connor Barron was out of control.

Don Robertson awarded Adegboyega a yellow card for the foul late in the first half. There was a VAR check for a potential red card, but Robertson’s decision stood (Sky Sports Scotland, 15 September).

And Egan – speaking exclusively to Ibrox News – feels that the correct decision was made by VAR.

“That one for me, the referee made the correct decision by awarding a yellow card,” he said.

“A yellow card is sufficient in this incident. I wouldn’t say that the player was out of control with his challenge, it was a mistimed challenge, but his left trailing leg is already planted on the floor.

“If he had won the ball, people would have called it a brilliant challenge. Therefore, I see nothing wrong with the referee’s decision to award a yellow card. This is an example of VAR getting things spot on.

“They went through the steps and there was nothing to suggest that the referee had made an error for VAR to overturn it. As a result, the correct decision was made.”

Emmanuel Adegboyega lucky to avoid red card v Rangers?

There will be mixed views on whether or not Adegboyega should have been sent off against the Gers.

For example, Kris Boyd, speaking on Sky Sports Football (12:57 pm, 15 September), was of the view that it was a red card. However, others – including Egan – would argue the opposite.

Either way, it meant very little as Rangers were still able to pick up the three points.

Therefore, Philippe Clement has likely already put the incident behind him as he focuses on kickstarting Rangers’ season.

Rangers haven’t been at their best this year. As a result, Clement will hope this win over Dundee United is a sign of things to come.

In other Rangers news, a journalist has named an “underwhelming” player at the club at risk of being axed after his display against Dundee United.
