Stefan Borson: Aston Villa have landed £10m profit after deal confirmed

Aston Villa have likely made about £10million from a profit and sustainability (PSR) perspective following the sale of Moussa Diaby to Al-Ittihad.

That is the view of finance expert Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider Diaby’s move is probably more about Villa getting money back on a player they believe they can improve on rather than trying to strengthen their PSR situation.

Diaby has made the move to Al-Ittihad after Villa accepted a £50million bid for the winger, who only joined Unai Emery’s side in a £52million deal from Bayer Leverkusen last summer.

Football Insider revealed on 24 July the Saudi Arabian club have handed the France international a £400,000-a-week deal.

Aston Villa selling Moussa Diaby not PSR-related

Borson admitted Villa are unlikely to have sold Diaby just to improve their PSR standing despite being close to their allowable losses limit last season.

He told Football Insider: “In simple terms, if they paid £50million for him, they would have incurred £10million of amortisation, which means his book value would have been £40million.

“They would have made a £10million PSR profit that crystallises in the 2024-25 season, which will be useful.

“Clearly, they would have also had about £10million of costs by the time you stick in all of his wages and the agent fees that went with the acquisition in the first place.

“From a cash perspective, they probably made nothing but got themselves out at a fairly neutral level.

“I suspect the biggest driver is not about PSR on that one, it’s probably much more about getting money back for a player they think they can improve on.”

In other news, Aston Villa could now accept offer for star defender.
