Stefan Borson: Celtic to land £30m windfall, Rangers suffer devastating twist

Celtic will benefit financially from Rangers failing to qualify for a place in the Champions League this season.

That is the view of finance expert Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider Brendan Rodgers’s side could now be in line for a £30million windfall as the only Scottish team competing in European football’s premier club competition.

Rangers were beaten 3-1 on aggregate by Dynamo Kyiv after the Ukrainian side secured a 2-0 second-leg victory in the third qualifying round at Hampden Park on 13 August.

The Glasgow club will now have to settle for a place in the Europa League, while their Old Firm rivals Celtic will be playing in the Champions League after securing the Scottish Premiership title last season.

Celtic to receive more TV revenue after Rangers failure

Borson revealed Celtic will receive more money from the new Uefa TV deal after Rangers failed to qualify.

He told Football Insider: “They will always benefit from a European perspective if they are the only team that qualifies because it splits in a different way.

“They will get a bit more upside from the Uefa deal.

“The problem is the Uefa revenues dwarf what they get domestically.

“When Celtic qualify and Rangers don’t, it’s not just that Rangers have lost £30million in absolute terms, they have lost £30million and their main competitor is going to get £30million.

“From a competitive position and a relative position, it really is problematic for Rangers and something that will be felt going forward.”
