Stefan Borson: Chelsea have landed 'Huge' profit after confirming another deal

Chelsea will likely make around £28million of player-trading profit following the sale of Conor Gallagher to Atletico Madrid.

That is the view of finance expert Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider it is a “huge” profit to add to the books after the west London club have been close to the spending limit over the past couple of seasons.

Gallagher finally joined Atletico Madrid on 21 August following a period of uncertainty over whether the deal would go through.

Chelsea decided to sell their academy product to the La Liga giants for around £35million to avoid losing him on a free transfer at the end of his contract in June 2025.

The London giants secured the signature of former loanee Joao Felix as part of the transaction, with the forward making the move to Stamford Bridge for £45million.

Borson suggested the Gallagher deal will ensure Chelsea earn a meaningful profit following another summer of heavy spending.

“Gallagher probably clears about £35million of profit,” Borson told Football Insider.

“That of course will be useful because it’s a huge profit, but they have lost a player.

“They have also acquired another player at around the same sort of price and we know that amortisation is now capped at five years.

“That profit that will go into the books at £35million is offset by a fifth in that first year straight away.

“The best they can expect is four fifths of that £35million net profit on that trade in the first year.

“That brings it down to about £28million.

“But it is a meaningful profit in the context of trading.”
