Stefan Borson: Chelsea have messed up 'terribly' over '£45m' deal

Chelsea still not having a front-of-shirt sponsor is a “terrible sign” for the club from a commercial perspective.

That is the opinion of financial expert Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider that it isn’t apparent why the club would have gone up in value since the Roman Abramovich era ended.

The Blues started last season without a sponsor on the front of their shirt, which has happened again for the 2024-25 campaign.

The Londoners managed to agree a short-term deal with Infinite Athlete in September of last year, but that deal ran out at the end of pre-season.

It has been reported that Chelsea had conversations with Saudi airline Riyadh Air, but they failed to agree on a contract.

Chelsea are not going up in value due to on and off-the-field situations

“On a desktop basis, it’s not obvious why it would have gone up in value,” Borson said to Football Insider.

“They have no Champions League, they’ve shown themselves to be. from a commercial perspective, quite reliant on Champions League really when you look at it.

“To still not have a shirt sponsor two years after Three departed, they had their short-term deal with Infinite Athlete last season, but to not have a long-term front-of-shirt sponsor is a terrible sign from a commercial perspective.

“Given that is a property that is worth, done in the way that they would like, worth between £30-45million a year which is a very significant amount of money in the context of a football club’s profit and loss count.

“You’ve got that issue, you’ve got the European issue.

“Clearly, since they bought the business it is harder to get into the Champions League.”
