Stefan Borson drops Chelsea ownership verdict after £550m rival deal talks

Chelsea co-owner Todd Boehly has made a further commitment to remaining at the club after opening talks to buy The Telegraph newspaper.

That is the view of finance expert Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider the takeover talk at Stamford Bridge has gone quiet recently following the improved on-field performances.

The Financial Times reported on 9 December Boehly has held talks about the possibility of becoming involved in a £550million sale of The Telegraph.

It said the American billionaire’s involvement could be alongside or instead of ongoing talks with US media executive Dovid Efune after he’s been in exclusive negotiations to aquire the British newspaper for more than a month.

Boehly had been involved in a takeover battle with Clearlake Capital’s Behdad Eghbali earlier this season, but reports around that situation have gone quiet recently.

The Chelsea chairman owns a 12.8 per cent stake at Stamford Bridge, while Clearlake secured a 61.5 per cent shareholding when the £4.25billion takeover deal went through in May 2022.

Chelsea owners have backed away from ‘impossible’ takeover deal

Borson suggested both parties have likely realised it could be an “impossible” deal to do at this moment in time due to the required finances involved.

“It looks like Boehly is keen to stay in London,” Borson told Football Insider.

“We had those weird stories at the start of the season where they were in complete meltdown and break-up, but it’s now all gone quiet.

“I suspect it’s gone quiet because it’s just an impossible deal to do.

“Neither party is prepared to buy the other out and to get a third party to come in and take the minority stake is going to be incredibly difficult at the sort of billions of pounds that would cost.

“I suspect it might be about necessity, but of course, when you are winning on the pitch, that covers over loads of cracks.

“But he clearly wants to stay in the UK if he wants to buy The Telegraph.

“You wouldn’t mess around buying a British newspaper I don’t think unless you were keen on remaining part of British culture in owning one of our major football teams and one of our major newspapers.”
