Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS have taken over the entire organisation at Manchester United as they look to significantly reduce the workforce at Old Trafford.
That is the view of former Man City financial adviser Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider part of the restructuring will be around financial engineering after BBC Sport reported on 3 July up to 250 members of staff will be made redundant.
The Premier League giants are believed to have made the decision as part of a determination to slash costs and scrap some “non-essential“ activities.
The Athletic reported on 24 July Man United have now informed several long-serving academy coaches and staff their roles may no longer be required ahead of the upcoming cuts.
Ratcliffe has been looking to transform the way the club operate on and off the pitch since securing a 27.7-per-cent-stake in February this year.
Man United cutting 250 staff before building workforce again
Borson believes the INEOS chief is now in charge of running everything at Old Trafford even though it was initially suggested he would only be overseeing footballing matters.
He told Football Insider: “If you are getting rid of 250 people, which is around 25 per cent of the workforce, then there is going to be people in that setup that you wouldn’t ordinarily want to lose.
“There will be people perceived to be in key positions on the footballing and non-footballing side.
“But the approach of people like Ratcliffe and INEOS is to go in hard on these sorts of restructurings.
“They are clearly involved in far more than they were set out to be. If you remember when they were first talked about in terms of the deal, they were talking about taking control of the footballing side and the sporting side.
“They are clearly taking control of the entire organisation, so they will do things their way as long as the Glazers are happy with it.
“Part of that will be financial engineering as much as anything and that means getting rid of 25 per cent of the workforce and building again.
“They probably have a view they do this in every one of the businesses they acquire.”
