Stefan Borson: Liverpool want to match Man United deal after '£100m' reveal

Liverpool could potentially land a new sponsorship deal worth up to £100million a season with either Nike or Adidas.

That is the view of finance expert Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider the Merseysiders will partner with whichever manufacturer offers them the most money.

Liverpool’s current deal with Nike, which is set to expire at the end of this season, is believed to be worth more than £60million a year to the club.

Sports Business reported in April the Premier League giants were ready to agree terms with Adidas from next season onwards.

The Liverpool Echo reported on 9 September the German manufacturer is likely to offer the Merseysiders a similar fee to the £75million Arsenal currently earn.

But that is significantly lower than the £900million deal Adidas agreed with Manchester United for the next 10 years.

Liverpool pitching to Adidas about big-money deal

Borson believes Liverpool will be insisting to both manufacturers they should receive a similar deal to United.

“I think they will be pitching to Adidas that they are worth the same as United,” Borson told Football Insider.

“The United deal is market-leading in terms of the scale of it.

“It wouldn’t be a surprise if they either get Nike to match the Adidas deal or they can get their own Adidas deal that they will go.

“I think particularly on shirt partner and kit sponsor, clearly it’s about money.

“Liverpool did have litigation in the past between New Balance and Nike that was partly driven towards the distribution towards the Liverpool kit.

“One of the features that Nike had that their previous partner didn’t have was just that global reach that Nike obviously was far ahead on.

“But Adidas also have that, so if it became a straight run between those two, you are really going to be looking at pounds and pence.

“If Liverpool can get £90-£100million out of Adidas or Nike, they will take it.”
