Stefan Borson: Man United have blown rivals away after 'Huge' deals agreed

Manchester United are still continuing to outperform rival clubs commercially after landing market-leading deals.

That is the view of former Man City financial adviser Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider Man United are still generating “huge” amounts of money from commercial activities despite not being successful on the pitch.

The Premier League giants agreed an initial three-year deal in September 2023 for Snapdragon, a subsidiary of Qualcomm, to become their new front-of-shirt sponsor.

The £60m-a-year deal is believed to be around a £12-15million increase annually on their previous deal with TeamViewer.

The Athletic reported on 15 August Qualcomm has now triggered its two-year extension option a year ahead of schedule, taking the US company’s overall investment in Erik ten Hag’s side to around £300million over the five-year period.

United also agreed a 10-year extension with kit manufacturer Adidas in July 2023, with the deal believed to be worth a minimum of £900million.

The Manchester club’s commercial revenue reached a new high of £302.9million in 2022-23, having risen by £45.1million on the previous year.

Man United commercial activity unaffected by lack of success

Borson believes the latest deals suggest United’s commercial activities haven’t been too badly damaged by their lack of on-field success in recent years.

He told Football Insider: “They are clearly a huge club and continue to outperform on the commercial side compared to everybody else.

“The deal that they did with Snapdragon is a market-leading deal for front of shirt.

“The deal that they have done with Adidas is a market-leading deal for the kit manufacturer, so they are still very accomplished on the commercial side and also have great brand appeal.

“There is no question that despite not really being successful over the last 10 years, they are still generating huge amounts of money from commercial activities that have not been that damaged by not having Champions League.

“But Champions League TV and prize money is very substantial and they have to have it.”
