Stefan Borson: Man United have claimed 20 times Arsenal losses after ‘Very Strange’ reveal

Manchester United claimed a Covid allowance of 20 times more than Arsenal in 2021/22 despite the two clubs recording comparable losses.

That is the view of former Man City financial adviser Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider it’s “very strange” United were permitted an exceptional £40million Covid allowance after Arsenal only claimed £2million for the same campaign.

Borson revealed most other top-flight clubs are believed to have claimed around £1-2million for 2021/22 – far less than the Manchester giants’ figure.

United also spent £30.3million in exceptional costs related to Sir Jim Ratcliffe buying his 27.7-per-cent stake at Old Trafford in February this year.

Football Insider revealed on 11 July Erik ten Hag’s side would have failed PSR last season if they weren’t permitted to add back those exceptional costs.

Man United haven’t done anything wrong claiming high Covid allowance

But Borson believes United haven’t done anything wrong and the question should be around why other clubs didn’t claim more Covid allowances.

“It has been confirmed now that United took a £40million Covid allowance,” Borson told Football Insider.

“The only question is what other clubs took. Aside from Nottingham Forest, the only one we know is Everton, who took an £8million allowance, and we know that from the PSR case.

“But if you were to go through the accounts of the other teams, nobody details that they had losses of any scale for 2021/22.

“Arsenal are the biggest that we are aware of who do state a loss, but there’s was only £2million. The claim from United is 20 times the claim from Arsenal, which obviously looks very strange.

“There is a process with the Premier League, whereby even if your accounts don’t specifically state the Covid losses, you can apply to the Premier League by sending them supplemental information.

“That’s what the Premier League say happened – a number of clubs sent supplementary information and did receive PSR allowances.

“But we know that the only clubs that could have had allowances of anywhere near £40million would be the big six because there is no way that the other sides outside of the big six at that time could have had a £40million loss.

Man United

“The key thing to highlight is United did get a £40million allowance for Covid in 2021/22. We are talking about a year when Covid had largely finished and almost every club said they had no losses for that year.

“Arsenal were the only club that had comparable losses to United and their number was £2million, so people can see the story and why it’s of interest.

“But I don’t think United have done anything wrong, the question is why the other teams didn’t claim more.”
