Stefan Borson shares verdict after confirmed £50m Aston Villa news

Aston Villa’s owners have injected another £50million into the club to help cover the substantial losses at Villa Park.

That is the view of finance expert Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider the West Midlands giants’ financial situation will improve if they perform well in the Champions League this season and continue to qualify for the competition.

A Companies House submission on 8 October confirmed the Villa owners have invested a further £50million into the club in the form of new shares.

The share issue represents the latest show of support from owners Nassef Sawiris and Wes Edens (NSWE), who have offered their financial support at Villa Park since securing their takeover in 2018.

It comes after Football Insider revealed on 6 September the duo had injected £44million into the club in a similar transaction.

Villa reported £217.7million of revenue in their latest accounts for 2022-23, while their wage bill stood at £194.2million.

Aston Villa owners need to continue injecting money after losses

Borson insisted NSWE are going to need to continue putting money into the club while their revenue and wage bill figures are at a similar level.

“They have got to pay the bills,” Borson told Football Insider.

“They need the cash in the club because they are loss making.

“Villa are one of those clubs that’s got a wage bill that’s very high versus its revenue.

“It will improve if they can continue to regularly qualify for the Champions League, and it will improve if they have a good Champions League season this season.

“But at the moment, they lose a lot of money, so they need the cash to be put in.

“It can either be put in as a shareholder loan or they can put it in as equity, as they have done here.”
