Stephen McGowan: Celtic have problem 'Rangers would kill for'

Stephen McGowan insists Rangers “would kill” to have a problem that Celtic now have with regards to finances.

The journalist pointed out in his column for the Scottish Daily Mail [20 September] that Celtic now have cash reserves of more than £77million.

It comes on the back of a summer in which the club brought in large funds and also spent a fair amount on replenishing their squad.

McGowan wrote: “The first Scottish outfit in history to spend £30m and finish a transfer window in profit, the Parkhead club are raking in more cash than Sue Gray and their conspicuous wealth creates a problem Rangers would kill for. How do they spend their £100m?”

Rangers desperately need to close financial gap on Celtic

It goes without saying – reluctantly – that Celtic are indeed in a much better position than Rangers right now. It’s a truth supporters must accept.

Celtic are making smart signings, selling at the right time for a large profit and then injecting that cash back into the squad.

The Gers, meanwhile, appear to be taking a longer-term approach with recent signings and, while that is not necessarily a bad thing, it means having to wait for many players to come good.

There is no reason why the Light Blues cannot close the gap in the coming years, and the best way to do that is by qualifying for the Champions League next season.

That competition brings in multiple-millions and would mean the ability to sign bigger-name talents in the 2025 summer transfer window.

With uncertainty high up at Ibrox and the team not firing on all cylinders on the field, that scenario still remains a fair way off.
