Stephen McGowan shares Philippe Clement sack verdict in 'Crippling' Rangers finance update

Stephen McGowan believes Philippe Clement being sacked by Rangers would only add to their “crippling” financial burdens.

The Light Blues crashed to a 1-0 defeat against Kilmarnock on 20 October in the Scottish Premiership, as a late Marley Watkins goal handed the Belgian his second defeat in the league this season at Rugby Park.

Subsequently, questions have been raised over Clement’s future at the club, and McGowan believes [Scottish Daily Mail, 22 October, pg 70] that the love is not shared with him at Ibrox.

“Rangers were so determined to go ‘all-in’ on the manager that Clement was handed a one-year contract extension in August,” he wrote in his column.

“While the Belgian claimed to have fallen in love with the club, the passion is unrequited and his presence seemingly only sustained by knowledge the sacking him would add to the club’s crippling financial burden.”

Philippe Clement to be sacked at Rangers?

Clement was appointed the Gers’ boss in October 2023, but while the Belgian did well and brought stability to the team, it made no sense to hand him a contract extension until 2028.

Michael Beale’s time at the club was catastrophic, and the subsequent appointment of the 50-year-old looked like a great decision before the end of last season.

However, it didn’t warrant a contract extension, considering some of the performances in the Europa League and late collapse in the Premiership.

After finishing second last season in the Scottish Premiership, it looks like a mammoth task for Rangers to go one step further and win the title as the Light Blues sit third, already six points behind Aberdeen and Celtic.

It feels like Clement’s time at the club could be coming to a slow end, and another negative result in the coming weeks might force the board’s hand, regardless of finances.

Hopefully, the 50-year-old can get things back on track and continue at the helm, with the club already looking leaderless without a chairman and CEO.
