Rangers’ Premiership showdown with Aberdeen is set to decide whether or not Philippe Clement is sacked at Ibrox, according to Chris Sutton.

The Belgian has come under pressure from fans and pundits alike after the Light Blues’ 1-0 defeat to Kilmarnock at Rugby Park on Sunday (20 October) with Marley Watkins’ late goal the difference between the two sides.

While it is unclear whether or not the decision-makers at Ibrox are considering Clement’s future, Sutton believes the clash with Jimmy Thelin’s side on Wednesday 30 October will decide his fate in Glasgow.

Writing on X on Monday (21 October) he said: “Aberdeen will likely be the game which decides Philippe Clement’s future… listen to the full pod version but here’s a snippet…your thoughts?”

Will Rangers sack Philippe Clement at Ibrox after loss v Kilmarnock?

Old Firm managers don’t tend to last very long when they’re losing. Clement only needs to look back at Michael Beale and Giovanni van Bronckhorst to realise that his position will become untenable if the tide doesn’t turn soon in Glasgow.

The Light Blues had a perfect opportunity to show their title credentials against Kilmarnock on Sunday, particularly after Celtic could only manage a draw against Aberdeen.

Instead, Clement’s side put in one of the worst displays under the Belgian’s tenure which demonstrated this current squad’s lack of creativity and a lack of desire to work hard when things get tough.

Whether or not that is the manager’s fault is up for debate. Some will argue this current crop wouldn’t be capable of winning a title if Pep Guardiola was in charge, but the buck will always stop with the man in the dugout.

This is Clement’s squad now. While he didn’t have loads of money to spend in the summer he did make several changes to the playing side.

He needs to show that he can hold his own against his title rivals, including Aberdeen if he wants to keep his job.
