Rangers manager Philippe Clement has revealed that Oscar Cortes is not available for the showdown with Dynamo Kyiv and will be sidelined for up to five weeks.
The Light Blues face the Ukrainian side in the first leg of their Champions League qualifier clash on Tuesday (6 August) as they look for their first win of the season having drawn 0-0 with Hearts at Tynecastle.
While the Belgian has much of the same group to work with as he did against Steven Naismith’s side, he will have to work without Cortes and it seems unlikely new signing Robin Propper will feature from the start.
As quoted by Rangers on X (5 August) Clement said: “Oscar Cortes did not travel, he will be out for around four to five weeks after a scan.
“It was a really unlucky fall with a twisted knee, it is an unlucky injury from a collision.
“Robin Propper is fit, but he has had a busy few days off the pitch he has had to sort since arriving in Scotland with his family.”
Are Rangers close to any new signings in the summer transfer window?
While that is likely better than most Rangers fans would have initially thought, it is a massive blow to the Light Blues to lose one of their most exciting players after only one match of the new season.
Cortes has added a different dimension to the Gers’ attack, but across his loan spell at the early stages of this campaign, his injury record has been a major cause for concern as he doesn’t seem to be able to stay fit and available.
Clement isn’t blessed with loads of depth in the wide areas either and will likely only be able to call upon Scott Wright and Rabbi Matondo from the start as Vaclav Cerny continues to get up to speed having arrived in Glasgow.
Hopefully, with the squad at his disposal in Poland on Tuesday, the Belgian will find a way to at least keep the tie alive before heading back to Ibrox. It won’t be easy, but there is still quality in this side that can have a major impact.
