Steven Pressley raises Rangers 'Issues', lowest finish in 7 years possible

Steven Pressley has warned that Rangers could suffer their worst league finish in seven years this season as behind-the-scenes “issues” are raised.

The former Gers, Celtic and Scotland man cites off-field problems as being the main danger of holding the club back, and believes Aberdeen can trump Philippe Clement’s side into second place this term.

The Dons join Celtic in maintaining a 100 percent record in the Scottish Premiership so far, having played seven games each; the Light Blues sit third, five points adrift of the top, and the two face off at Pittodrie on 30 October.

Pressley, speaking on Record Sport’s Hotline [9 October], said: “To be honest with you, I think Aberdeen can [finish above Rangers] – I think there’s a chance.

“Because, at present, Rangers have got some issues and I don’t mean on the pitch. I look off the pitch and they don’t have a CEO, a director of football or an academy director.

“I think there is an opportunity for Aberdeen this year.”

Rangers in danger of slipping out of top two

Admittedly for Rangers, bar the Old Firm defeat, there has not really been a cause for major concern in on-pitch league performances.

Some games have been scrappy and harder fought than Philippe Clement may have desired or expected, but the results have largely been there – so it makes the visit north to Aberdeen at the end of this month a tantalising prospect.

It will be the litmus test for how a side flying beyond their own expectations will fare against a club shrouded in backroom chaos.

This season is certainly the one which provides the most doubt of Gers’ top-two status since 2017-18, when they last fell short as the multi-year journey from the pits of the league was smoothing out.

Many would still back the men from Ibrox to snatch ahead of Aberdeen within the coming months, partly down to a hope that the squad rebuild will be ironed out in January.

But it is on course to be the closest it has been in some time, and that in itself is a total frustration given the anticipation for Celtic to stroll to the title once again.
