'Strange' - Daily Record journalist issues James Tavernier verdict ahead of Rangers v Hearts

Kyle Gunn believes the decision to start James Tavernier as Rangers take on Hearts on Sunday is a strange one by Philippe Clement.

The Daily Record journalist does not see the reasoning in the Englishman being the third choice in mid-week to suddenly starting ahead of Dujon Sterling and Neraysho Kasanwirjo.

Sterling started against Olympiacos on Thursday and Kasanwirjo came off the bench for him but both of them have not been included in the playing eleven on 10 November.

Via X, Gunn wrote: “James Tavernier may go on to score and help Rangers win today but that situation is a strange one.

“Third choice on Thursday night and straight back in this evening…”

Philippe Clement continues to make baffling calls at Rangers

Clement’s decision-making process, particularly with his choice to start Tavernier against Hearts, raises questions about his strategic vision and consistency.

After relegating the 33-year-old to third choice in the mid-week game against Olympiacos, his sudden inclusion in the starting lineup seems erratic, potentially signalling a lack of clear plan or confidence in his squad.

This inconsistency could undermine team cohesion and player morale, especially for Sterling and Kasanwirjo who might feel sidelined as they are not injured and included on the bench.

If Rangers fail to secure a positive result against Hearts, this could reflect poorly on the Belgian’s leadership, resulting in his sack, especially in a season where expectations are high.

Such a result might prompt the board, already under pressure due to the club’s performance, to consider a managerial change during the international break.

For Tavernier, this game represents a critical opportunity to prove his worth, potentially silencing critics and demonstrating his continued value to the Ibrox outfit.

In other Rangers news, an update has emerged on a cup-winning manager moving to Ibrox to replace Philippe Clement.
