Tam McManus has admitted that Rangers defender John Souttar was “superb” in Scotland’s showdown with Portugal.
Steve Clarke’s side picked up an excellent point with a 0-0 draw in the Nations League on Tuesday (15 October) as they managed to keep the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo and Diogo Jota quiet at Hampden Park.
Although PLZ pundit McManus was quick to laud Clarke for his tactical set-up and team selection, the former Hibernian man was left blown away by Souttar and the rest of the back line’s display at the national stadium.
Writing on X on Tuesday (15 October) he said: “Team selection & tactics spot on. McLean, Souttar & Hanley all superb.
“All credit to Steve Clarke. Great result against a very good Portugal side. We have shown in every game in this Nations League we can be competitive in the top pots unfortunately just lacked a cutting edge.
“Well done Scotland.”
What happened to Rangers ace John Souttar in the international break?
It has perhaps gone under the radar slightly in the last few weeks just how reliable and consistent Souttar has become for both his club and country.
The Scotsman isn’t the world’s best defender, but he is probably the best centre-back at Philippe Clement’s disposal at this time. Despite plenty of change in and around him at Ibrox, the defender has continued to flourish in a Rangers shirt.
His partnership with Robin Propper may still be in its infancy, but the signs suggest that the pair can be relied upon in the long run. Whether or not it is a Premiership-winning duo remains to be seen however as there is still a lot of work to be done.
Hopefully, Souttar will return from the international break full of confidence having kept one of football’s greatest-ever players quiet at Hampden Park. His display for his national side can only be a good thing for Clement and Rangers.
The Gers boss will need him to hit the ground running on the domestic stage when the Light Blues travel to Rugby Park to face Kilmarnock on Sunday (20 October).
