Tom English drops one-word verdict on Rangers ace after what he did on int'l duty

Tom English described John Souttar as “terrific” after the Rangers star’s performance for Scotland against Portugal on Tuesday [15 October].

The BBC Scotland chief took to X [15 October] to post his thoughts on the Gers defender’s display, keeping a clean sheet to frustrate Cristiano Ronaldo and his teammates in a 0-0 draw at Hampden Park.

Several in the Scottish media, including BBC Sportscene’s Willie Miller, heaped praise on Souttar on the night as the ex-Scotland player labelled him undroppable.

English added his own thoughts on social media, posting: “Great point for Scotland. Worked like demons for it.

“[Craig] Gordon and Souttar will surely stay in the team when everyone’s fit. Souttar has been terrific.”

Souttar can be especially proud of his performances in the past few weeks, after even one of his shakier recent games against Hibernian yielded a clean sheet last month – he just appears to have a consistent degree of nous even when not at his best.

He has raised his individual game since then, and Scotland have been this week’s beneficiaries with a commanding performance to offer zero change to a very animated Ronaldo and his Portuguese pack.

If we are all honest, Ronaldo will have felt certain to bag at least a couple and to come away victorious – but even beyond the decorated superstar, the opponents Souttar and his side faced were with respect far from what he faces on a weekly basis.

Bruno Fernandes and Diogo Jota also started in Glasgow, and were kept at bay by a Scottish side containing Ben Doak, born over three years into Ronaldo’s professional career.

Philippe Clement will be encouraged by the performance and above all relieved to see his man come through the international period unscathed, ahead of a crucial return to club action at Kilmarnock on Sunday [20 October].
