Rangers have a “frankly alarming” lack of quality in attack and need new signings as supporters are in a “panic”, according to Andy Newport.

Writing for the Daily Record’s jury (22 July), the journalist said that the return of Danilo from long-term injury is currently the only saving grace that Light Blues fans have going into the new season.

He also highlighted Cyriel Dessers’ lack of composure up front, suggesting that additions both at centre-forward and out wide were desperately needed if the Gers are to mount a Premiership title challenge.

Newport said: “The lack of quality in the final third is frankly alarming – no wonder the Rangers support are in a panic.

“Danilo’s return from seven months out should spare the punters having to watch Dessers stumble around for another season.

“Gers really need better quality down the flanks if they are to mount anything like a challenge to Celtic.”

Rangers need new striker transfer to make up ground on Celtic

On top form, both Dessers and Danilo are more than a match for any defence in the Scottish Premiership, and their 20 goals from just 32 combined top-flight starts last season reflects that.

However, Dessers was guilty of seemingly missing more clear-cut chances than he put away, and that profligacy only increased as the Gers’ title charge derailed towards the end of the campaign.

Danilo is back in the fold at Rangers after a seven-month serious injury lay-off last season

Given Danilo is still making his way back from a skull fracture that threatened to end his career, he’ll likely be given a free pass by the Ibrox faithful should a return to form take longer than expected.

Dessers will have no such margin for error though, and his costly misses at even costlier times last season have resulted in Clement reportedly being happy to sell him for the right price this summer [Tutto Mercato, 10 July].

Even if Dessers stays put in Glasgow, the Gers simply cannot afford to be solely reliant on him and Danilo next season. Another option, on top of the addition of Hamza Igamane, is paramount, particularly if Clement wants to lay down the gauntlet to Celtic and ensure his job is secure.

In other Rangers news, Amad Diallo sent a message to the Ibros faithful after playing against his former side for Manchester United.
