Chris Sutton has fired a fresh jibe at Rangers and Philippe Clement after Celtic’s 6-0 thrashing of Aberdeen in the Scottish League Cup.
Brendan Rodgers’ side will meet the Light Blues in the League Cup final at Hampden Park next month after Clement’s Gers managed to beat Motherwell 2-1 on Sunday (3 November) to get back to winning ways.
During Celtic’s win over The Dons, Rodgers was spotted falling on his backside, but Sutton was quick to suggest Clement had suffered a bigger “slip” when the Light Blues were beaten 2-1 at Pittodrie in the Premiership.
Speaking on It’s All Kicking Off (4 November, 24:43) Ian Ladyman said: “Did Brendan Rodgers deserve a yellow card for falling on his backside as Celtic beat Aberdeen 6-0?
“The wheels are off for the Dons.”
Sutton, laughing replied: “That was a funny moment and he’s got a low centre of gravity as well Brendan but that slip wasn’t as big as Philippe Clement’s in the week at Aberdeen.”
Will Philippe Clement exit Rangers amid Ibrox sack speculation?
While the Light Blues managed to get back to winning ways in the League Cup on Sunday, that win has barely papered over the cracks that have emerged under Clement at Ibrox.
The Belgian is coming under ever-increasing pressure from fans and pundits alike as his side continues to produce performances that have left more than a lot to be desired both on the domestic and European stage.
Even when they win, like they did at Hampden, they don’t look anywhere near the pace of Celtic or even Aberdeen. Most supporters have accepted the fact that the Gers are out of the title race before it has even really got going.
Clement may well be safe from the sack at this moment in time, but that slip at Pittodrie could well prove to be costly. It would not be a shock if the Belgian received his marching orders in the coming weeks, particularly if results don’t improve.
Even on a weekend where Rodgers was left with an egg on his face after landing on his backside, it is Clement whose future is in focus.
