Rangers have people behind the scenes that are not pulling their weight and need to take the idea of a Dave King return “really seriously”, says Derek Ferguson.
The South Africa-based businessman, who remains the largest individual shareholder at the club after investing millions at Ibrox, has challenged the Gers board to call an EGM and vote on his return as chairman.
He has been very critical of the current hierarchy [Rangers Review, 16 September] and believes he is the man over the next to years to deliver the club onto the right path after John Bennett was forced to resign on health grounds [Rangers Review, 15 September].
And ex-Ibrox midfielder Ferguson feels the move would make a lot of sense despite King’s divisive nature, as that might be exactly what the club needs in order to jolt those in charge into action after letting the fans down.
Speaking exclusively to Ibrox News: “I think the club have got to take it really seriously. He’s come out, he’s put himself out there, wanting to come in and probably kick a few backsides in the process as well.
“He’s been quite vocal, and quite rightly so. I think there’s maybe a few behind the scenes that are just kind of sailing along instead of putting the work in.
“Listen, these guys that are on board and work for Rangers, they’re there to serve the supporters, the fans. The fans pay the big bucks in terms of the merchandise, turning up at the games it’s always a full house, so the loyalty is there, that’s undoubted.
“He’s obviously had a look at it and thinks there’s not enough guys pulling their weight so that’s why I think we’ve got to take him seriously if we could get him in the door.”
Rangers interim chair John Gilligan censures Dave King
If King is going to get back in it doesn’t look like he will get it done going about it in public and by trashing the current set up.
Whatever truth might be behind his arguments he looks like he is fighting a losing battle that way after interim chairman John Gilligan urged him to “behave like a proper shareholder” [BBC Sport, 23 September].
There’s no escaping the fact that the hierarchy over the past few seasons, or in many cases the lack-thereof as key positions remain empty, have allowed the club to fall from the top of Scottish football a long way back from Celtic.
It may require somebody to bang some heads together at Ibrox to get things moving in the right direction again, but there looks to be enough opposition to King that it won’t be easy for him to be that person.
In other Rangers news, a Light Blues ace was blasted live on American television for his “horrific” actions.
