Sean Dyche will be questioning whether he is even the best man for the Everton job following Saturday’s stalemate with Brentford, according to Troy Deeney.
The Toffees failed to break down a 10-man Brentford side at Goodison Park [23 November], leaving the side with just two Premier League wins from 12 so far.
Deeney, who played under Dyche at Watford, took to talkSPORT [25 November, 15:24] to air his verdict that all parties may be wondering the extent of his future at the club.
“It’s been difficult for Sean and the team, because they’re having their legs cut from them all the time from a financial point of view. Be solid, be safe, stay up. You know what you’re going to get. I think he and the club would like to kick on,” the pundit explained.
“By all accounts, Brentford were the better team with the ball, which is always a worry. If you’re an Everton fan watching that with 11 men against 10, still can’t score or create chances, you start to think ‘is he the best man moving forward?’
“You know I love ‘the gaffer’ to death, but he might be thinking the same thing.”
Everton approaching Sean Dyche crossroads
Everton are approaching the head of a dilemma, particularly with the imminent arrival of The Freidkin Group [TFG] to begin a new era on Merseyside.
It has long been discussed whether TFG will launch a refreshed vote of confidence in Dyche long-term, or if they will lean into the ruthless streak they have already shown in abundance at Roma this season and strive for immediate success.
And this leads to what constitutes ‘success’ at Everton nowadays: Dyche brings the stability of which the club have had nowhere near enough, and with his experienced head at the helm there are little relegation fears compared to if they ventured into the unknown.
But they are very unlikely to go one better, to break back into the top 10, with a view to challenging for Europe once again in the coming years – and that is where pressure may further build for the trigger to be pulled and the risk to be taken.
With a potential sacking of Dyche comes chaos; by a renewed show of faith in their manager, Everton risk sleepwalking into top-flight irrelevance.
In other Everton news, Dyche could attempt to offload Dominic Calvert-Lewin in January.
