Andy Townsend has told Everton manager Sean Dyche to stage a last-minute Championship raid to sign a new striker ahead of the transfer deadline.

The Toffees are without a win from their opening two games of the Premier League season and are the only team yet to score a goal in the division having been thrashed 4-0 by Tottenham last time out.

Dyche’s side are once again reliant on the goals of Dominic Calvert-Lewin and talkSPORT pundit Townsend believes the Toffees should look to secure a cut-price deal for an EFL player in the final days of the window.

Speaking on talkSPORT on Monday (26 August, 8:41) he said: “Ipswich just went and got Sammie Szmodics from Blackburn, a proven goalscorer in the Championship. Someone who has been rattling in serious numbers.

“If Everton can’t find something that they would ideally like because of the cost and because of the difficulty of getting players to come, then you’d think they’d be going into the Championship and trying to raid something.

“Go up to Scotland, there must be one or two that would run through brick walls.”

Will Everton make new signings ahead of transfer deadline at Goodison Park?

It is clear that the Toffees need to sign a new number nine before the transfer window slams shut on Friday 30 August because this current side has never looked like scoring a goal so far this season.

While there are plenty of defensive concerns at Goodison Park as well, the primary issue lies at the top end of the pitch, especially as Calvert-Lewin continues to be linked with a late move away ahead of the deadline [TBR Football, 25 August].

The ownership and financial situation at Everton means that the Blues don’t have millions of pounds to spend on a new forward. But as Townsend suggests, there is value in buying players from the Championship.

Yes, signing a player from outside of the Premier League would represent more of a gamble than spending big on a star with top-flight experience, but the Toffees can only afford what their budget will stretch to.

Hopefully, a new centre-forward is signed sooner rather than later, otherwise this could be a very difficult campaign for Dyche’s men.
