'That's outrageous' - Andy Halliday left stunned after what he saw Rangers player do

Andy Halliday was stunned that Rangers striker Cyriel Dessers did not step up to take the fifth penalty against Celtic.

Gers suffered a penalty-shootout defeat against the Hoops on Sunday in the Scottish League Cup final with the score 3-3 after 120 minutes.

Jack Butland and Ridvan Yilmaz both took penalties but Dessers did not volunteer for one despite being brought off the bench by Philippe Clement.

Halliday told PLZ Soccer on 17 December at 44:15: “I think that’s outrageous, honestly. Your goalee’s taking the fifth penalty. I know he scored so you can’t say it’s wrong but how can Yilmaz be taking a penalty over Dessers or Butland taking a penalty over Dessers?”

Cyriel Dessers has failed to win over the Rangers fans

This was a decision that baffled not just Gers fans but anyone who watched the final.

The attackers are the ones who are best at spot kicks and unless they’re not confident, they step up for it.

Sometimes, midfielders can go ahead of them as they can be cleaner strikers of the ball, but for a non-penalty-taking full-back and goalkeeper to do that was baffling.

It’s ironic that Dessers is getting more stick for not taking a penalty than Yilmaz is for missing one as most people can understand why the latter would happen.

There’s a good chance the Turkish defender would not even have practised penalties as extensively as some of his other teammates.

Dessers has made things really difficult for himself with that and there are now talks about that potentially being the final nail in the coffin with regards to his career at Ibrox.

It remains to be seen if the club will cash in on him in the January transfer window.

In other Rangers news, the club are now looking to sign a Chelsea player in January with the club open to offers for him.
