'The Glamour Of Man United Will Fade' - Keith Wyness drops devastating verdict

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness has claimed Man United risk their potential 100,000-seater new stadium becoming a “white elephant”.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – insisted the “glamour” of the club will fade if their lack of success continues.

The BBC reported on 29 July that Man United’s owners hope to decide whether to spend more than £2billion on a new 100,000-seat stadium by the end of 2024.

Renovating the existing Old Trafford stadium, which would cost around £1.2billion and take longer to complete, is also on the table for club chiefs.

United co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe has spoken regularly about building a ‘Wembley of the North’ for the club since buying his stake in the club earlier this year.

However, Wyness insisted the Red Devils must continue to be a force on the pitch if the £2billion project is to be successful.

He told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “They can’t risk letting this plan get in the way of things on the pitch.

“United have got to continue putting together a first-class project on the pitch.

“The way they’ve been going since Ferguson left, this 100,000-seater stadium could become a white elephant.

“The glamour of Man United will fade.

“I’m not a big fan of the way Ratcliffe has approached things, I’m disappointed – there are big question marks.”
