Jhon Duran has undermined Aston Villa in their negotiations with West Ham following a gesture he made on social media.

That is the view of finance expert Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider Villa will be annoyed their negotiating position has been affected as they look to receive their asking price before sanctioning a move for the forward.

The Athletic reported on 27 July the West Midlands giants are investigating the Colombia international’s actions after he appeared to cross his arms to make an Irons-shaped gesture on social media.

The two Premier League clubs have recently been locked in negotiations over a fee for Duran as he looks to secure a move away from Villa Park.

But Football Insider revealed on 31 July they are still far apart in their valuations of the 20-year-old as Villa are looking for a fee in the region of £40million.

Borson insisted Duran’s gesture could end up costing Unai Emery’s side millions by publicly showing he only wants to join West Ham.

He told Football Insider: “I think the biggest concern with things like this is they just undermine the negotiating position when they are trying to sell the player.

“It can end up costing them a lot of money.

“Let’s say they are £5million apart on where they want to be on the transfer and the player does something that effectively says they only want to go to one club – that smashes their part in the negotiating position.

“It feels trivial, but there is a real cost to something where it impacts the negotiating position of the selling club.

“That’s what they will be annoyed about.

“I think everyone accepts around the table that the player is out the door as long as they can get the fee that they want.”
