Manchester United are not in a position to spend big on new signings in the January transfer window despite a £79million injection from Sir Jim Ratcliffe.
That is the view of former Man City financial adviser Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider Man United are “very tight” from a profit and sustainability (PSR) perspective.
Ratcliffe purchased a 27.7 per cent stake in United in February this year after agreeing a £1.25billion deal with the Glazers.
The deal included an agreement that would see the INEOS chief inject £238million into the club and the £79million is the final instalment of those payments.
The latest investment has seen the British billionaire take his stake in the Manchester giants to 28.94 per cent.
United posted a club-record revenue of £661.8million for 2023-24, while they made a net loss of £113.2million across the same period.
Man United are likely to be close to PSR limit
Borson revealed Ruben Amorim’s side will have limited leeway to agree new signings in the upcoming transfer window.
“People have said this is infrastructure money and not transfer money,” Borson told Football Insider.
“The reality is there is no distinct pot. The money that has come into the club will be applied for whatever they want to apply it for.
“I think the truth is that they are just not in a position to be making a lot of transfers and spending money anyway in this window.
“They are very tight on PSR.
“They are probably not forced to sell in this window, but I think they have got very limited leeway to be able to buy.
“You have got to separate the cash coming in from profit.”
