Newcastle United submitting a late bid for Everton striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin ahead of the transfer deadline can’t be ruled out, according to Graeme Bailey.

The journalist told Everton News on Thursday (15 August) that the Magpies remain keen on the England international and while no transfer is imminent, a move to St James’ Park could still happen.

Sean Dyche’s side remain hopeful that Calvert-Lewin will put pen to paper on a new deal at Goodison Park, but the Toffees are powerless to impact proceedings at this point of the transfer window.

Discussing the interest, Bailey said: “I still wouldn’t rule Newcastle out of this. There’s still two weeks to go. Newcastle like him a lot.

“He still hasn’t signed that contract. Nothing imminent, but I think over the last two weeks I wouldn’t rule anything out. I think there’s still interest there from a few teams.”

Will Dominic Calvert-Lewin exit Everton amid Newcastle United transfer rumours?

While Everton will be desperate to keep their primary source of goals on Merseyside this summer, Calvert-Lewin’s contract situation will make it difficult for the Toffees to reject any offers that may arise.

Dyche’s side cannot afford to risk letting the striker walk away for nothing at the end of his contract in 12 months’ time, but they equally won’t want to let him leave for a cut-price fee in the final weeks of the window.

Should Newcastle finally act upon their interest that has been present throughout the summer, Dyche and Kevin Thelwell will have a big decision to make and it could have a major impact on the Blues’ season.

Hopefully, Everton’s hope won’t have been misplaced, Newcastle’s interest won’t produce a genuine transfer offer and Calvert-Lewin will put pen to paper on a new deal once the window closes so that hopes can remain high heading into the new campaign.
