'They're desperate' – Pundit urges Premier League owner to invest in Rangers

Rangers are “desperate for investment” and would be a good club for Tony Bloom to get involved with, according to Jim Duffy.

Speaking on the Clyde 1 Superscoreboard (17 September), the former Dundee and Hibernian manager said, after reports that Brighton owner Bloom could invest in Hearts [BBC, 16 September], the Gers are a better option.

The Light Blues are currently in search of a new chairman following John Bennett’s resignation, which came just weeks after reports of a US-led takeover were quashed [Rangers Review, 27 August].

Duffy said: “I don’t get this Tony Bloom thing at Hearts – to invest £10million in and deal with the recruitment.

“Why would you not look at Rangers? They’re a huge club, they’ve got an unbelievable fanbase, they’re desperate for investment.

“Their recruitment hasn’t been great, so you go in there with your analysis company and you say ‘we will put the money in and we’ll look at the players’ – you’d think that would be something a club like Rangers would have to look at seriously.“

Tony Bloom investment could be transformational for Rangers

On top of appointing a new chairman, CEO and academy director in the coming weeks and months, another priority of the existing Gers boardroom should be to secure further investment in the club.

Hopes and dreams of a multi-million (or billion) takeover led by a US or Middle Eastern consortium don’t look like coming to fruition any time soon, meaning the Bears may have to look closer to home.

Rangers chairman John Bennett

Interim chairman John Gilligan’s top priority will be to address internal issues rather than external investment in the wake of Bennett’s resignation [Chris Jack, 17 September], but the involvement of Bloom could be game-changing.

The impressive rise of Brighton through the leagues and into Europe under his stewardship cannot be understated, and the prospect of bringing their top-class recruitment model to Ibrox is a tantalising one.

Philippe Clement and Nils Koppen have led a huge overhaul in Glasgow this summer, and though it’s too early to declare the Gers’ rebuild a success, adding Bloom’s expertise to the mix could shape a squad which proves to be the envy of Celtic.

In other Rangers news, Alan Brazil has shared what he was told about Dave King’s prospects of returning to the club as chairman.
