'This Is A Huge Risk' - Keith Wyness reacts as Chelsea agree £60m Palmer deal

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness has insisted Chelsea are taking a “huge risk” by handing the likes of Cole Palmer and Nicolas Jackson nine-year contracts.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – claimed “injuries and other issues” could mean the Blues don’t get any value from selling the pair in the future.

In recent days, Jackson has followed Palmer in signing a nine-year deal at Chelsea after a good first season at Stamford Bridge in the 2023-24 campaign.

Reports have suggested that Palmer now earns £130,000-a-week – or more than £60million over the course of his mega deal.

The England international has already contributed one goal and four assists in three Premier League games this term, while Jackson has notched two goals and one assist.

Chelsea’s £60m Palmer ‘experiment’ could backfire, says Wyness

Wyness insisted the outcome of the Chelsea “experiment” will only become clear in “five years”.

He told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “They’ve extended the contracts, they’ve amortized it even further.

“It’s no longer seven or eight years, it’s now nine, 10 or 11 years.

“That’s how they seem to have done it with Palmer and Jackson.

“It’s certainly very strange, and I would never have thought of it when I was in the game.

“It’s just a huge risk to take with players who can get injuries and other issues.

“While Palmer has had a good season – that’s all it has been, one season.

“You hope they’ll kick on because they are quality players – but will you get the value for these players in three or four years?

“It’s still an experiment. In five years, we’ll know if it works – but there are a lot of unknowns.”
